The exhibition "Nuove verticali a Milano"
3 Towers by 3 prestigious Architectural Firms

The exhibition "Nuove verticali a Milano" shows the threes projects, three towers, in their final phase, designed by three contemporary architectural firms: 5+1 AA, Archea Associati e Boeri studio.
The towers will be constructed in three different points of the city: the tower of 5+1 in the open, bordering the city and urbanised countryside. (Rozzano); the tower of Archea in place of Montedison building in the Mac Mahon zone; the Boer tower of Study in the area between the Island quarter and Garibaldi station.
Three plans that have nothing in common between them, other than that of being born in Milan, for Milan.
The tower by 5+1 AA gives the idea of enlarging the boundaries of Milan on the outer-ring road side where a 200m tower stands, a brilliant work of volume and perspective makes it a two-dimensional vision standing out in the skyline the sky like a horizontal tower.
The Tower by Archea and Associates replaces the Montedison offices with a plan that converses with the skyscrapers of Milan for excellence: the Velasca tower and the Pirellone. A sculptured figure with 4 roofs, 23 floors + 4 interiors with a total height of 94 meters. The decorative elements and work spaces will be realized in collaboration with artists, architects, photographers and designers.
The vertical Forest is instead the plan by the Boer firm, an important example of eco-sustainable architecture: two towers, 108 metres high with 23 floors, the other one, 78 metres and 21 floors, the one will house 900 trees six metres in height and shrubs for a surface area, totalling 7000 sq.m of forest. This will create a microclimate, to produce humidity, to absorb CO2 and dust and to produce oxygen. On the outside of Ciascuna tower the realization of 22 aeolich structures is for seen, leaves of the parapets of the terraces will accommodate photo panels for a total surface of 500 mq. This will contribute to the micro- air-conditioning factor and the auto-sufficiency in terms of energy production for the towers.
"We have chosen these plans because they are three Italian answers very different to many of those offered by architects of international acclaim." explains Luca Molinari curator of the exhibition together with the young architect Nicholas Russi. "Not indifferent plans but rather answers to spaces themselves. Even if we have to use skyscrapers to mark the change that in itself will change the face of the city from not just an industrial one but a city with advanced services in keeping with the rest of Europe. New tall buildings to mark the modernity of the city, an anomaly for such a horizontal city in terms of buildings, although recent history has shown otherwise with the construction of the Velasca Tower and the Pirelli skyscraper.
These are the questions, this is the theme of the exhibition, "Nuove Verticali a Milano", an occasion to reflect and understand and discuss publicly the changes that are to come.
The tower by 5+1 AA
The outer-ring road represents the imaginary walls of Milan, Intensified with towers and green belts, resembling the Manhattan skyline and in her interior parks.
One of the first elements of Master Plan for the D3 area will be a series of towers, the principal one being 200m high, to the north of the outer-ring road. The tower is not a formal gesture, but it establishes a relationship with its territory and Milan.
Like a seal, perhaps. It does not have a main front, but a sequence of floors that absolve the environmental energy aspects and react differently during the day.
On the north-south axis along the section that characterizes the profile and makes one understand the corresponding volume almost making it seem abstract from East to West: The tower that is not.

The Tower by Archea and Associates
Constantly in conflict between the structure of the towers and the consolidated sullivaniana conception of the skyscraper, the plan for Milan by Archea Associates defines a new city reference that having the same size surface area of the Montedison offices, currently in demolition, will accommodate residences, services and stores at the foot of the new building.
The idea to construct vertically to free space at ground level derives from the group Australian Babcock & Brown whom, after having obtained the necessary permits, consulted with various Italian Firms, choosing the solution which best expressed the traditional living in Milan.
Archea has proposed has launched a body, varied in height with grand “scanalature” to accent and launch this concept, interpolation – one could even think of a sort of morphing between the various sections of the Torre Velasca and the the Pirelli skyscraper. The proposed solution resembles a sculptured figure able to break the monolithic aspect of the previous buildings and a landmark for the whole block, a new perimeter and a different use of the road crossing the square inside the lot.
As far as the functional aspect, there will be four floors for parking, housing in total 300 cars. The ground floor will be used for both commercial and residential use, 22 floors consisting of apartments, a restaurant on the 23rd floor and a terrace on the top floor. The finishes will be in stone, with 24 carat gold used to give off light even when twilight comes.
The roof of two of the four towers in which the main body appears subdivided, will accommodate a green belt having many plants reminiscent of the Milanese tradition of the hanging gardens. The spaces Inter-exteriors of the lodgings are characterize by a continuous system of “logge” that filters the light, almost like a double skin that allows for energy saving. The building will be governed by an advanced system of technical illumination control, the night time visibility will be guaranteed by photocells that access the external light points as the sunsets, while the software will manage the colours in relation to light in the different seasons. The construction program also allows for decorative elements and for work spaces collaborating with contemporary artists, photographers and designers that will be asked to add with their ideas to the intrinsic value of this work.

The vertical Forest
The Bosco Verticale is made of two towers - 108 metri/28 floors, including the ground floor - 78 metres 22 floors, including the ground floor.
Plants The vertical forest will host roughly 900 trees, 3-6m in height and also shrubs, for a total pf 7000sq.m.
The plants will be planted according to their need for sun e.g: - North wall: birches, cronus - West wall: pear trees - South wall: oaks - East wall: cherry trees, bamboo
The Vertical Forest helps: - Constitutes a microclimate - produces humidity - absorbs CO2 and dust - produces oxygen
The irrigation will be mainly provided by the use of condensation produced as a by product from the air-conditioning. The maintenance of the plants of each apartment will be centralised and will be carried out by those responsible for the green houses in the towers.
Aeolic: on the top of each tower there will be 22 Aeolic towers. Solar: an area of 500 sq.m of solar panels will cover part of the terraces that are better exposed to sunlight. Photovoltaic + Aeolic power: will contribute to the self-sufficiency of this project, in terms of energy production and air-filtering.
